“Today, we should all be honest in recognizing the impact that violence in defense of white supremacy has had on our Black and Brown communities. This violence has been endorsed by policing and criminal legal systems throughout the country and these systems have been exposed as unjust and unequal"

While this verdict brings a certain rare form of accountability for police, achieving this outcome for Mr. Floyd is only one step in addressing police abuse of power, disparate treatment, and excessive force against Black and Brown communities. We still must radically change policing in Nevada

The American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada filed a lawsuit against the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and the Rio hotel on Monday. No Nevadan should have their civil rights violated just for attending a birthday party, yet that is exactly what happened to the plaintiffs in this case. 

Nevada’s failure to adequately prepare for the harmful effects that COVID-19 would inevitably have on our criminal justice system has put thousands of lives — both inside and outside of detention facilities — at risk.
