ACLU of Nevada’s Firewall for Freedom campaign is both a proactive and responsive strategy to protect our rights and our people from unlawful federal interference.

What is ACLU of Nevada’s Firewall for Freedom Campaign?

Across the nation, the federal government is attempting to dismantle long-standing protections for free speech, privacy, equality, and democracy. But freedom doesn’t just live in the courts or in Washington. It begins right here, in Nevada. Our cities, counties, and communities can be the first line of defense against federal overreach.

ACLU of Nevada’s Firewall for Freedom campaign is both a proactive and responsive strategy to protect our rights and our people from unlawful federal interference. When local leaders refuse to be complicit in unconstitutional acts, when city councils pass protections, and when neighbors look out for each other, that’s how democracy endures. Local policies, local leadership, and local courage can stop unconstitutional federal actions before they take root.

Our Strategy

Building a Firewall for Freedom won’t happen from one single tactic. It’s an organized, statewide defense plan that combines lawyers, policymakers, advocates, and community members into one coordinated effort to stop unconstitutional overreach before it hits our communities.

  • Legal Defense: Challenging unlawful federal actions and coercive tactics through the courts.
  • Policy Advocacy: Working with state and local officials to pass laws and ordinances that block unconstitutional overreach.
  • Public Engagement: Investing in community education to ensure Nevadans understand their rights and protect one another.

The Four Pillars of our FIREwall for Freedom

Our Firewall for Freedom campaign stands on four essential pillars – putting the FIRE in our Firewall.

F - First Amendment

Free speech isn’t partisan, it’s patriotic. Nevada’s strength lives in our freedom to speak, assemble, and dissent without fear.

As federal officials ramp up surveillance and threaten to criminalize dissent, Nevada must strengthen local protections for protesters, journalists, and digital privacy. We’re not here to tell you what to say or what not to say. We’re here to ensure you have a right to engage in constitutionally protected speech devoid of government censorship.

I - Immigrants' Rights

We protect immigrants because we protect Nevadans.

Our communities thrive when families are safe, workers are respected, and neighbors are free to live without fear. The federal government’s immigration agenda threatens to rip families apart, detain children, and sow chaos across our communities. The federal government has gone so far as to detain legal permanent residents and US citizens and has resorted to profiling people based on how they look and the language they speak. We cannot allow our state and local governments to be complicit.

ACLUNV’s FIREwall for Freedom exists to say: Nevada will not be complicit in cruelty. Our local governments, schools, and agencies will not turn their backs on our neighbors as the federal government attempts to kidnap them off Nevada streets.

R - Right to Vote

The right to vote is the cornerstone of freedom. Our votes are our power, and we will not surrender them.

Across the country, federal officials are undermining trust in elections and pushing anti-democratic policies. But here in Nevada, we know that an inclusive democracy works. We’ve proven that secure and accessible voting can coexist, and we must protect that progress.

ACLUNV’s FIREwall for Freedom exists to say: Our democracy belongs to the people and we will not let fear, lies, or federal overreach steal the people’s power.

E - Equal Protection

Equal protection under the law protects people from discrimination. It has been a longstanding American value.

With the nation’s most expansive equal rights amendment, we cannot allow our local or state government to undermine Nevada’s constitutional protections against discrimination based on race, color, creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, disability, ancestry, or national origin. It’s not about protecting just one group. It’s about protecting all groups in accordance with our Constitution.

ACLUNV’s FIREwall for Freedom exists to say: Discrimination has no place in Nevada and our state remains a place where everyone, without exception, can live authentically and freely. And we intend to keep it that way.
