LAS VEGAS — The ACLU of Nevada on Tuesday released the following statement following the Assembly floor vote approving Assembly Bill 282. AB282 proposes to ensure that long-term substitute teachers have access to health insurance.
ACLU of Nevada executive director Athar Haseebullah said:
“Long-term substitute teachers have an important role in our education system, and our state can take a huge step forward in making sure they know they are valued by guaranteeing access to health insurance. We’re proud to have worked with Assemblywoman Shondra Summers-Armstrong on this legislation because we know we need to incentivize our substitute teachers to stay in classrooms and hopefully to pursue licensure. We’re at a critical point in which Nevada needs to address the equity issues subs are facing, or we will continue to lose them.”
