LAS VEGAS – The American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada condemns the murder of Renee Nicole Good, a Minneapolis woman, by ICE agents yesterday. As depicted on video, ICE agents fired a gunshot at Good as she was seeking to drive away from ICE agents, ending her life while once again demonstrating ICE's lawless actions.

The killing reflects a broader immigration enforcement system that operates with little oversight, escalates routine encounters into deadly confrontations, and fails to hold agents accountable. These tactics undermine community safety and endanger the very communities they claim to protect, leaving families shattered and communities traumatized. The incident has sparked protests and vigils in Minneapolis and across the country, as people exercise their First Amendment rights to demand accountability and an end to violent immigration enforcement.

As protests likely unfold in Nevada, ACLU of Nevada is amplifying Know Your Rights information to best protect protesters statewide. The organization also has an online reporting feature at aclunv.org/ProtestReport and will staff its protest hotline at 702-659-7535 to take reports from protesters who experience violations of their First Amendment rights.

In the aftermath of the June protests, ACLU of Nevada represented a number of protesters in Las Vegas who were detained by police and initially faced improper criminal charges. Civil lawsuits from those protests are pending upon the completion of medical treatment for those who were injured.

ACLU of Nevada executive director Athar Haseebullah said:

“ICE murdered Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis in public, and the Department of Homeland Security has since lied about what occurred to try to cover up the unlawful actions of its ICE agents. DHS had the audacity to say its agent was acting in self-defense, a claim that is demonstrably false based on video of the incident, but nonetheless consistent with DHS’s egregious pattern of misconduct. This is not the first time DHS has misled the public to deflect scrutiny. After ACLU of Nevada filed a public records lawsuit against the DMV a few months ago, DHS engaged in similar lies by stating the source of ACLUNV’s case was ‘A MURDERER’ instead of the public records themselves, demonstrating the agency’s lack of basic competence and utter failure to maintain even a morsel of honesty.

“As federal immigration officials continue to engage in unlawful conduct, we will continue to challenge both the actions of ICE and of weak state and local governments that continue to collaborate with it. As people take to the streets to demand justice and exercise their First Amendment rights, we urge local law enforcement agencies not to engage in costly and dangerous practices that violate those rights. Police too often attempt to discredit protests by painting protesters as violent or dangerous, which is why it remains critical for people protesting to Know Your Rights and remain compliant with the law.”
