LAS VEGAS – Civil rights advocates and community members will gather in front of the Regional Justice Center on Wednesday morning ahead of a state court hearing over the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s 287(g) immigration policies.
We will begin to gather on the sidewalk near the main steps at the Clark County Regional Justice Center, 200 Lewis Ave., about 9:30 a.m., with a short speakers’ program at 10 a.m. featuring ACLU of Nevada executive director Athar Haseebullah and others.
The hearing is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. in front of District Court Judge Monica Trujillo (Department 3). For information about press coverage procedures, contact the courthouse public information office or visit clarkcountycourts.us/general/media.
In October, the American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada filed a challenge to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s 287(g) agreement with ICE. That agreement allows ICE to use local law enforcement resources to assist in carrying out its federal immigration enforcement agenda, but the ACLU of Nevada argues that local agencies violate state laws in doing so. Additional information and legal filings from the case can be found online at aclunv.org/cases/morais-hechavarria-v-las-vegas-metropolitan-police-department/.
The case is Morais-Hechavarria v. LVMPD, Case No. A-25-930343-W.
