LAS VEGAS – The ACLU of Nevada’s motion to intervene in a lawsuit to remove over 11,000 registered voters from Washoe County’s voter rolls has been granted, finding that the organization had substantial interest in joining the case. The lawsuit initiated by the Citizen Outreach Foundation seeks to challenge voter registrations based solely on data from the National Change of Address (NCOA) database. The nonprofit, nonpartisan organization intervened to protect the rights of Washoe County voters, with at least seven of those challenged in the lawsuit being members of the organization. ACLUNV argues that the lawsuit violates state and federal laws, particularly prohibiting systemic voter roll purges within 90 days of an election.
A hearing has been scheduled for October 15 at 9 a.m.
ACLU of Nevada voting rights attorney Sadmira Ramic said:
“We are relieved that the court has granted us the opportunity to step in and protect our members and Washoe County voters from these baseless and unlawful mass voter challenges. Our intervention will ensure that we can defend the voting rights of those who would otherwise be disenfranchised. We look forward to continuing the fight to safeguard the fundamental right to vote for every eligible voter in Washoe County.”
