Nevada Legislature Urges United States Congress to Remove Marijuana from Schedule I of the Controlled Substance List
LAS VEGAS — The ACLU of Nevada released the following statement after the Nevada Senate voted on the floor to pass Assembly Joint Resolution 8, which urges Congress to remove cannabis as a Schedule I controlled substance on behalf of the state of Nevada. The resolution will now proceed to Congress and does not need approval by the governor.
ACLU of Nevada Executive Director Athar Haseebullah said:
“The Nevada Legislature has made its intent crystal clear with the passage of AJR 8, and that intent conforms to the Nevada Constitution: cannabis has medical value and does not belong on Schedule 1 of the Controlled Substance Act. Whether Congress chooses to act is a decision they must make, but the voices of Nevadans and the intent of this Legislature are without ambiguity. Nevada remains a national leader in cannabis reform, and we are grateful for sponsors Assemblywoman Brittney Miller and Assemblyman Reuben D’Silva, along with over 30 bipartisan co-sponsors, for their support of this important legislation.”
