The American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada announced the launch of its latest voter education effort, Smart Justice Nevada. The campaign will engage Southern Nevada voters about the primary election in the Clark County District Attorney race through voter education events, field organizing, direct mail, and digital ads.
ACLU of Nevada executive director Athar Haseebullah said:
“County DA races have a huge impact on our communities. These races should be counted amongst the most important ones on the ballot. Smart Justice Nevada is dedicated to educating voters about the critical importance of the Clark County District Attorney. The DA has tremendous power, including the authority to seek independent investigations when police kill or seriously injure civilians and to pursue the death penalty.”
Prosecutors are the most powerful actors in the criminal legal system. They decide what crimes to charge, who will be detained in jail before their court date, and they control the plea deals offered.
ACLU of Nevada Smart Justice campaign manager Anthony Curry said:
“Despite the substantial power that district attorneys wield, many candidates in Nevada run unopposed or in races that are decided in a primary election. The people of Clark County have the power to make this a top-tier race in 2022. We're excited to let voters know about the powerful reforms the Clark County DA can make to build a safer and healthier community.”
