Clark County School District Student Sex Education Essay Competition

The essay competition is now closed. Thank you to everyone who participated. Scholarship winners will be announced the week of October 5, 2015.

 

The ACLU of Nevada invites students from Clark County, Nevada to express their opinions about how to improve sex education in CCSD. Student voices have been silenced for far too long and we hope to inspire student participation about their needs and perspectives by giving students the opportunity to have their #SexEdSay. Essays should focus on who should receive sex education; what sex education should be and what would make it more inclusive and effective; why sex education is important; and how sex education should be taught in schools. We invite all eligible students to participate.

Eligibility
  • Students who reside in and attend public schools in Clark County are eligible.
  • All students in grades 9-12 eligible to participate.
Instructions
  • Essays should be between 600-750 words.
  • Essays should be typed and double-spaced (San Serif font, size 12, with 1 inch margins.)

Regulations
  • Send submissions to sexedsay@aclunv.org no later than Friday, September 25, 2015 (We've extended the deadline). Attach the essay and entry form as one document.ESSAY COMPETITION” should begin the subject line.
  • Each essay must reflect the student’s own research, writing and original thinking.
  • Only one (1) essay may be submitted by each student.
  • The student’s name and school must appear on the top of each essay page.
  • Upon submission, essays become the property of the ACLU of Nevada (ACLUNV). The ACLUNV reserves the right to publish, promote, publicize, and use the essays as it deems appropriate. Writers will be acknowledged.
  • Essays will be judged on how effectively the topic is addressed through original thoughts, and unique perspectives, and whether arguments are fact based, structured logically, and display clarity of writing.
Awards
Winners will be announced publicly on October 5, 2015.
  • First Prize         $5,000
  • Second Prize     $3,000
  • Third Prize         $2,000
(We reserve the right to withhold awards if there are not sufficient entries deemed to merit the prizes.)
