LAS VEGAS – American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada (ACLUNV) is pleased to announce the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) national ambassador, socio-political comedian and TV host, W. Kamau Bell, as the special guest speaker at the ACLUNV’s 50th Anniversary Gala on Saturday, June 11, 2016 at 6 p.m. at the Wynn Las Vegas.
Bell serves as the ACLU celebrity ambassador for racial justice and sits on the advisory board of Race Forward, a racial justice think tank, along with Hollaback, a non-profit movement to end street harassment. He is a sociopolitical comedian and host of the hit CNN docu-series, United Shades of America. Formerly, Kamau was best known for his critically acclaimed, but criminally short-lived FX comedy series, Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell. Kamau is also the host of Kamau Right Now!, a public radio talk show that airs on KALW in San Francisco, and host of the podcast Denzel Washington is The Greatest Actor of All Time Period. Kamau's debut stand-up comedy special, Semi-Prominent Negro was directed by Morgan Spurlock, and it premiered on Showtime in April to rave reviews. The New York Times called Kamau "the most promising new talent in political comedy in many years."
“As the ACLU celebrity ambassador for racial justice, I see the work that both the national and state chapters do firsthand. The organization has made a tremendous impact on individuals across the country and I am thrilled to take part in commemorating this historic milestone with ACLUNV and all Nevadans,” stated Bell.
Celebrating 50 years of public service, the ACLUNV will honor five additional notable Nevada dignitaries at the gala including Jan Jones Blackhurst who will be honored with the Community Equality Award and Paula Francis who will receive the First Amendment, Freedom of Press Award. Colin Seale will receive the Community Juvenile Justice Award and Sheila Leslie will be recognized with the Liberty in Government Award. Richard Siegel will receive the Emily Wanderer Award.
The gala will include dinner, a silent auction, entertainment, and a VIP ticket option that includes a one-hour cocktail reception and meet-and-greet with world-renowned artist and designer, John Van Hamersveld and W. Kamau Bell. Tickets are on sale now and are priced at $250 per person with VIP tickets priced at $350 each. Tickets can be purchased online at https://aclunv.org/50thAnniversary.
