Democracy

Free Speech

Freedom of speech is protected by the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The right to express yourself regardless of the popularity of your views is basic to a democratic society.

Open Government

The ACLU fights for principles of open government, and works to ensure that citizens are able to monitor the operation of government and the deliberations of government officials.

Privacy

The ACLU of Nevada works to defend privacy as it relates to medical information, the Internet, consumer information, other personal information, and more. Being free from government intrusion into our lives is an important aspect of privacy rights.

Voting and Elections

The right to vote is fundamental to our democracy. The ACLU supports election reforms that are consistent with the one person, one vote standard of the Fourteenth Amendment.

Equality

Education

The ACLU of Nevada works to ensure equal opportunity to public education for all students, including the most disadvantaged and educationally at-risk students, and that students’ constitutional rights are protected.

Immigrants' Rights

The ACLU supports rights for all people within the United States and is committed to expanding and enforcing the civil liberties and civil rights of non-citizens and to combating public and private discrimination against immigrants.

Racial Justice

Our society must not discriminate against individuals based on their ethnicity or the color of their skin. America has come a long way in reducing racial bias and inequality, yet much remains to be done.

Justice

Capital Punishment

The death penalty is the ultimate denial of civil liberties. It inherently violates the constitutional ban against cruel and unusual punishment and the guarantees of due process of law and of equal protection under the law.

Police Practices

The ACLU of Nevada advocates for accountability and oversight of law enforcement officers. We work to ensure that police officers do their jobs without violating individuals’ constitutional rights.

Prisoners' Rights

The ACLU is dedicated to ensuring that Nevada’s prisons, jails, juvenile facilities and immigration detention centers comply with the Eighth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, state and federal law, and international human rights principles.

Criminal Justice Reform

The Bill of Rights protects every person in America against suspicionless searches and seizures, and it guarantees due process to individuals who are accused of crimes. All too often, the rights of those involved in the criminal justice system are compromised or ignored.

Liberty

LGBT Rights

The ACLU of Nevada is committed to working for the full legal and social equality of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender employees, students, couples, and other individuals.

Religion and Belief

The right to practice religion, or no religion at all, is among the most fundamental of the freedoms guaranteed by the Bill of Rights.

Reproductive Freedom

The ACLU protects everyone’s right to make informed decisions free from government interference about whether and when to become a parent.

Second Amendment

The ACLU of Nevada respects the individual’s right to bear arms subject to constitutionally permissible regulations and defends this right as it defends other constitutional rights.
