The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is our nation’s guardian of liberty. The ACLU is a nationwide nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to preserving, protecting, and defending the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to all people in this country by the Constitution, Bill of Rights, and laws of the United States.

The ACLU was founded by a roomful of activists in 1920 outraged by the civil liberties abuses they were witnessing all around them. Now, the ACLU is truly a national organization with over 550,000 members and supporters as well as affiliate or national chapter offices in all fifty states and Puerto Rico. The ACLU has always maintained the position that civil liberties must be respected, even in times of national emergency.

The ACLU of Nevada is an affiliate of the national organization. Officially chartered in 1967, the ACLU of Nevada has nine full and part-time staff with offices in both Las Vegas and Reno. Like the national organization, the ACLU of Nevada's work is based on those principles outlined in the Bill of Rights. Learn more about the mission of the ACLU of Nevada.

The ACLU of Nevada works to defend and advance the civil liberties, civil rights and other fundamental human rights of all Nevadans. The ACLU of Nevada works in three areas: public education, lobbying, and when necessary, litigation. Public education efforts are aimed primarily at helping the public understand their rights and responsibilities.

The ACLU of Nevada lobbies and works with both the state and local governments to defend Nevadans civil rights and liberties, and we have developed a reputation for our tenacity and unwavering principles. Litigation is the last resort for the ACLU of Nevada.

The ACLU of Nevada is composed of two separate corporate entities: the ACLU of Nevada, Inc. and the ACLU of Nevada Foundation. The ACLU of Nevada does not receive any government funding. The ACLU of Nevada is supported by annual dues from its members, individual donations, grants from private foundations and individuals, and court-awarded legal fees. Members of the ACLU of Nevada are also members of the national American Civil Liberties Union.
