Volunteers Needed Election Day (November 4)
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Nevada and other non-partisan Election Protection coalition partners seek volunteers for Election Protection – the nation’s largest non-partisan voter protection program – on ELECTION DAY, NOVEMBER 4. Election Protection is a national coalition that works throughout the year to break down barriers to the ballot box for traditionally disenfranchised voters. Election Protection is a non-partisan effort and is not affiliated in any way with any candidate or political party. Individual volunteers, however, do not have to be non-partisan or registered independent to participate in this non-partisan effort.
There are both legal and non-legal volunteer opportunities. Volunteer attorneys, paralegals and law students will serve as Mobile Legal Volunteers (“MLVs”). MLVs work in teams of two or more and monitor a zone of 4-10 polling places, respond to incidents reported through the national voter hotline (1-866-OUR-VOTE), and assist voters at the polling place. Non-legal volunteer opportunities include poll monitoring inside specific polling locations.
Volunteers must attend an in-person 1 ½ hour training session and are asked to sign up for a 4-5 hour shift. Materials will be provided. Volunteers will receive an e-mail in late September or early October with a link to sign up for specific trainings and shifts.
Potential issues to be addressed on election day include dissemination of misinformation by poll workers problems associated with electronic voting machines and potential intimidation of voters.
Protection targets communities traditionally disenfranchised, including African Americans, Asian Pacific Americans, Latinos, Native Americans and other racially and ethnically diverse communities, seniors, young people, low-income voters and individuals with disabilities.
