Students, Check Your High School’s Web Filters!

Did you know that it’s illegal for public schools to use their web filtering software to deny students access to positive, affirming information about lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender issues while allowing access to anti-gay websites?

In February of 2011, the American Civil Liberties Union’s LGBT Project, along with the Yale Law School LGBT Litigation Clinic, launched the “Don’t Filter Me” campaign to prevent viewpoint-discriminatory censorship of positive LGBT web content in public schools nationwide.

The ACLU is asking public high school students throughout the U.S. to check your high school’s web filters and help us make sure you’re not being blocked from information you have a right to have! Many school districts have changed their web filters in response to this campaign. In March 2012, a Missouri school district was ordered by a court to replace the web filter that blocked LGBT friendly sites

If YOUR school is blocking LGBT-friendly websites, tell us about it.
