Study on Murder Cases in Clark County Completed

LAS VEGAS, NV - The American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada thanks Dr. Terance Miethe of the Department of Criminal Justice, University of Nevada—Las Vegas, for conducting a study on defense attorney time spent on murder cases in Clark County, and also Clark County Commissioner Chris Giunchigliani for having commissioned the study by Dr. Miethe. Dr. Miethe observes that defense costs associated with capital cases are $170,000 to $212,000 higher than in those cases where the death penalty is not sought.

Domestic Partner Benefits Approved by Public Employees’ Benefits Program

LAS VEGAS, NV – The American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada commends the Nevada’s Public Employees’ Benefits Program Board for its unanimous decision on March 29, 2012, to approve the same subsidy for health insurance for domestic partners of public employees as it does for spouses.

ACLU of Nevada Makes Use-of-Force Policy Recommendations to Metro

The American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada today presented the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department with written recommendations for changes in its use-of-force policy.

Today’s communication follows a March 21, 2012 meeting between the ACLU of Nevada, Sheriff Doug Gillespie and other Metro officials, the NAACP of Las Vegas, and new Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson, at which the ACLU of Nevada presented Metro with a preliminary draft of its recommendations during a long and wide-ranging meeting.

Nevada Equal Rights Commission Shirks Responsibility to Redress Student Discrimination

LAS VEGAS, NV - The Nevada Equal Rights Commission on Friday dismissed a request from the American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada for NERC to issue a declaratory order confirming that it has jurisdiction over claims of discrimination in Nevada’s public schools because state law classifies education institutions as “public accommodations.” (NERC already exercises jurisdiction over discrimination in public accommodations.)

Third Ballot Initiative to Restrict Women’s Health Care Challenged in Nevada

LAS VEGAS – A group of registered Nevada voters today filed a lawsuit challenging a proposed ballot initiative that could ban abortion care, common forms of birth control and in-vitro fertilization. The voters are represented by the American Civil Liberties Union, the ACLU of Nevada, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, and Griffin, Rowe & Nave, LLP.

ACLU of Nevada and NAACP of Las Vegas Submit Petition to U.S. Justice Department

The American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada and the NAACP of Las Vegas on Friday submitted a petition to the U.S. Department of Justice calling for the federal department to conduct a “patterns and practices” investigation of the Metropolitan Las Vegas Police Department.
