Pre-Registration for Domestic Partnerships Begins August 24
The Secretary of State’s Office recently announced that couples wishing to register as domestic partners may pre-file their declaration starting August 24. The domestic partnership law will go into effect on October 1. Couples who pre-register will receive their domestic partnership certificate on October 1.
This past legislative session, the Nevada State Legislature passed SB283, a bill that creates the ability consenting gay and straight couples to enter into a domestic partnership, a civil contract that extends most of the rights and responsibilities of marriage to unmarried domestic partners. The Nevada Assembly and Senate overrode Governor Jim Gibbon’s veto of the bill.
Couples wishing to enter into a domestic partnership can download the declaration form from the Secretary of State’s website here.
Couples may file their completed domestic partnership form in person on October 1st, but are not guaranteed to receive their certificate that day.
Information on completing and submitting the form are also available on the Secretary of State’s website, www.nvsos.gov.
