An individual woman, a pharmacist, and an obstetrician-gynecologist filed a legal challenge against the Personhood Initiative on November 12, 2009.

In Bristol v. Personhood Nevada, plaintiffs argue that the initiative proposes far reaching changes to the Nevada Constitution and laws, is misleading, and fails to give voters a clear understanding of its effect and the changes it proposes. The case seeks to inform voters of the unpredictable, extreme, invasive, and unwise consequences of a vote for “Personhood.”

“The key problem,” said Lee Rowland, attorney for the ACLU of Nevada, “is that it covered too many issues and failed to explain to voters its intent and impact on Nevada law.”

The plaintiffs are represented by the ACLU of Nevada, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, the ACLU’s Reproductive Freedom Project, and the law firm Kaempfer Crowell Renshaw Gronauer & Fiorentino.
