Retroactive Reclassification Doesn't Reduce Recidivism

At the April 5, 2012, meeting of Nevada’s Advisory Committee to Study Laws Concerning Sex Offender Registration meeting, psychologist Stephan Brake, Ph.D., who has worked extensively with sex offenders, presented a study he conducted analyzing research that has been published on recidivism rates of adult sex offenders. His presentation did not come to any conclusions regarding the recidivism rates of adult sex offenders and seemed to suggest nothing more than that some sex offenders reoffend sometimes.

Halloween: No “Treat” for Those Convicted of Sex Offenses

This Halloween marks the 7th year that “Operation Scarecrow” has been in effect in the Las Vegas area. Operation Scarecrow is an effort by the Nevada Department of Public safety to heighten surveillance of registered sex offenders during the Halloween holiday. The Division of Parole and Probation adds extra regulations to the conditions to the probation and parole of sex offenders that essentially ban them from Halloween.

The Nevada ACLU was shocked to hear that the Las Vegas Metro Police Department (LVMPD) has released a video in which they admit to a DNA sample error which led to the wrongful conviction and 4 year incarceration of a Las Vegas man.

Automatic DNA Collection Bill Dies in Committee

The bill requiring automatic DNA collection of arrestees died in committee on Monday evening. Assembly Bill 552 would have mandated collection of DNA from anyone arrested for a felony, whether or not DNA is necessary to investigate the crime, and whether or not the individual is ever charged or convicted of the crime.
