Community Meeting To Re-Open Circle Park - Las Vegas

Monday, August 24, 2009 - 6:00pm to 7:00pm

What: community meeting regarding possible plans to reopen Circle Park in Huntridge neighborhood of downtown Las Vegas
Where : Mesquite Club, 702 E St Louis Avenue, Las Vegas

After the ACLU won a case declaring that a City of Las Vegas ban on sharing food with the homeless was illegal, Circle Park was closed. The closing was attributed to a self-defense homicide in the park, but many have noted that other public places are not closed after an incident of violence. Now the City has possible plans to re-open the park as a Veterans Memorial.

The ACLU of Nevada hopes that the City does not plan to restrict access of homeless people to the park. It is noteworthy that many homeless people are veterans and should be honored as well.

The park land was given to the City by a private party, and a deed
restriction prevents it from using it as anything other than a public
park, so the ACLU questions the fact that the park has been closed for
so long.
