75th Session

ACLU of Nevada Shines at Legislature

Dear Friends,

The 2009 session of the Nevada legislature concluded on June 2nd, and we at the ACLU of Nevada have never been prouder of our legislative efforts and accomplishments. With the support of civil libertarians like you, we made a huge difference in Carson City and helped to preserve the fundamental freedoms that are enshrined in the Constitution and Bill of Rights.

Trampling the Constitution Won’t Solve Nevada’s Budget Crisis

Tucked into Governor Gibbons’ proposals to solve the budget crisis are thinly-veiled attacks on the Constitution and Nevada’s libertarian ethos. Some measures are illusory: they won’t actually solve Nevada’s financial woes because they shift the financial burden from one part of the criminal justice system to an increase in liability. Others measures undermine individual rights and civil liberties.

ACLU of NV Applauds Passage of Domestic Partnership Law

The ACLU of Nevada commends the Nevada Legislature for passage of a Domestic Partnership law, a major step forward toward equal rights for all Nevadans.  This achievement comes after months of intensive lobbying and outreach by the ACLU of Nevada staff, in cooperation with a coalition of partner organizations committed to fairness and individual freedom.  We are proud of the leading role we played, and grateful to everyone who contributed their time, energy, and passion.

ACLU of Nevada Opposes Bill Stripping Due Process Rights of Gun Owners

AB 46 would deny Nevadans their constitutionally-protected due process right when subjected to guardianship proceedings that would result in the elimination of their right to possess or purchase a firearm. It also gives total immunity to any individual involved in the processing of those records, thus eliminating any checks on potential abuse of the system.
