On Wednesday, the Reno City Council voted unanimously to approve extending health insurance benefits to the registered domestic partners of City employees. The ACLU of Nevada applauds the Council's vote and hopes that other cities in Nevada will do the same.

"The principal issue of human dignity, human relations, we simply don’t put a precise price tag on those things," said Lee Rowland, Northern Coordinator for the ACLU of Nevada. "Now, any couple can share their life together."

The Secretary of State’s Office recently announced that couples wishing to register as domestic partners may pre-file their declaration starting August 24. The domestic partnership law will go into effect on October 1. Couples who pre-register will receive their domestic partnership certificate on October 1.

This Thursday, June 25, the ACLU of Nevada is joining the Nevada LGBT community, friends, and supporters in celebrating the passage of Nevada's Domestic Partnership Law, SB 283.

The gala celebration hosted by Harrah's Entertainment and planned by the ACLU of Nevada, the Gay and Lesbian Community Center, the Human Rights Campaign, and PLAN, will take place at the Rio Hotel & Casino ballroom, June 25, from 5:30PM to 8:00PM. It will be a chance for everyone in our community to gather and recognize this important moment in our state's history.

The ACLU of Nevada commends the Nevada Legislature for passage of a Domestic Partnership law, a major step forward toward equal rights for all Nevadans.  This achievement comes after months of intensive lobbying and outreach by the ACLU of Nevada staff, in cooperation with a coalition of partner organizations committed to fairness and individual freedom.  We are proud of the leading role we played, and grateful to everyone who contributed their time, energy, and passion.

1. Nevada Should Join The Growing Number Of States That Already Provide Anti-Discrimination Protections Based on Sexual Orientation.

Free speech unplugged, unfettered. With a handheld camera, Anthony Romero, director of the ACLU, documented the debate for and against same-sex marriage. While legal arguments were made inside the California Supreme Court, the crowd gathered outside made their public opinion arguments known. It's a true First Amendment moment, where all points of view are defended by the ACLU.

The ACLU of Nevada, in partnership with Stand OUT for Equality and other Nevada organizations committed to LGBT rights, is participating in an exciting event designed to engage citizens in the process of lobbying for equality for all Nevadans.

Las Vegas ACLU staff, supporters, and friends turned out on Tuesday, November 25 for an advance screening of MILK. The new film, starring Sean Penn, chronicles the life and times of Harvey Milk, the first openly gay public official in the United States.

The ACLU of Nevada is joining with other local groups committed to LGBT rights to co- sponsor the Human Rights Campaign’s Camp Equality, June 28-29 in Las Vegas. The weekend-long program offers lectures, discussion, and training for individuals interested in community organizing and campaign work. The event, in its inaugural year, has been staged successfully in Florida and Arizona, with local ACLU affiliates present at both.
